The quiet south
The south of Mallorca is flat, wide and still: fields and dry-stone walls running to the coast, then salt pans, dunes and the pale water of Es Trenc and Ses Covetes. There are no large hotel zones here, but fishing villages such as Sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi, the cliffs at Cala Pi and the lighthouse at Cap de Ses Salines, from which the island of Cabrera is in plain sight.
Villas and fincas here mostly stand on large plots between Llucmajor, Campos and Ses Salines: old country houses with palms and cisterns, modern fincas with a pool and a long view to the sea, and houses in the small seaside settlements of Cala Pi, Vallgornera, Sa Ràpita and Cala Blava. Those who seek quiet and are content to drive five minutes to the beach find more land and more distance from the neighbours here than on the better-known coasts.
Palma airport is 20 to 40 minutes away, Palma itself half an hour, and Santanyí and Cala d'Or are reached in 20 minutes. A stay in the south includes the boat to the Cabrera national park from Colònia de Sant Jordi, the market in Campos, the Maioris and Son Antem golf courses near Llucmajor and an evening at the harbour in Sa Ràpita. Florian Settele knows these houses in person and will tell you frankly where the wind picks up in the afternoon and where the garden stays shaded all day.
Frequently asked questions
How far is the airport from the south of Mallorca?
Llucmajor and Cala Blava are 15 to 20 minutes away, Cala Pi and Sa Ràpita around 30, Colònia de Sant Jordi and Ses Salines 40 to 45 minutes.
Which beaches are in the south?
Es Trenc and Ses Covetes are the well-known natural beaches with dunes and shallow water; Es Carbó near Colònia de Sant Jordi is quieter still and reached only on foot; Cala Pi is a narrow inlet between cliffs. In high summer it pays to arrive early, as parking at Es Trenc is limited.
What is the minimum stay?
Usually a week in high season, often less in the other months. Each villa's calendar shows the minimum stay for your dates; for anything particular we ask the owner.
What is Cabrera?
An archipelago off the south coast, protected as a national park, with excursion boats from Colònia de Sant Jordi, snorkelling in the Blue Cave and footpaths up to the castle. Tickets and private boat charters can be arranged by our concierge on request at an additional charge.
