Mallorca North at a glance
Two bays and the mountains behind them
The north of Mallorca is greener and more open than the rest of the island: the two great bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, the Formentor peninsula with its cliffs and the lighthouse at the cape, and behind them the last ridges of the Tramuntana. Pollença, which many British visitors still know as Pollensa, with its Sunday market and the 365 steps of the Calvari, is the elegant small town; Alcúdia, with its medieval walls and the Roman ruins of Pollentia, the historic one; and Port de Pollença, with the Pine Walk along the water, the place for long evenings.
Villas here stand in the hills between Pollença and Port de Pollença looking over the bay, in Cala Sant Vicenç above its four small coves, beside the Pollença golf course, at Bonaire and Alcanada by the water near Alcúdia and as fincas on the plain towards Campanet and Sa Pobla. Many are stone houses with a large garden, a pool and mountain views; British guests who have returned to Pollença for decades have given the town its international character.
The airport is 50 to 60 minutes away. In return you have the shallow beaches of the bay, Formentor as a day out, cycling and walking in the Tramuntana, sailing and kitesurfing in the bay of Pollença, the S'Albufera bird reserve and two golf courses. Florian Settele knows these houses in person and can tell you which villa suits a family with bicycles and which suits guests who still want to swim in the sea in October.
