Mountains, oranges and the sea far below

Between Sóller, Deià and Fornalutx the Tramuntana gathers at its densest: terraces of orange and lemon trees, villages of honey-coloured stone, steep lanes and the sea far below at Cala Deià or Llucalcari. The cultural landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Sóller has a square of Modernista façades and a historic tram to the harbour, Fornalutx is held by many to be the prettiest village on the island, and Deià has carried a reputation as an artists' village since Robert Graves settled there.

Villas and fincas here are hillside houses: old country homes with terraced gardens and views down the valley, stone houses among the olive groves above Deià looking out to sea, modern villas above Port de Sóller with an infinity pool facing the bay. Plots are often terraced and the approach roads narrow and steep, but the evening view is long. We know these houses in person and will tell you which drive is awkward in a large car and where the sun drops behind the mountain early.

Sóller is 35 to 45 minutes from the airport through the tunnel, toll-free since 2017; the old pass road or the historic train from Palma is the lovelier, slower way. Waiting for you are the Saturday market in Sóller, walks on the GR 221 dry-stone route, boat trips to Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, and restaurants in Deià and Fornalutx. Florian Settele knows the houses of these valleys in person and will advise you where family, quiet or proximity to the harbour is best served.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the airport from Sóller and Deià?

Through the tunnel it is 35 to 45 minutes to Sóller and Port de Sóller, around 45 to Fornalutx and 45 to 55 to Deià. The tunnel has been toll-free since 2017.

Are there sandy beaches in the north-west?

Port de Sóller has two sandy beaches in its sheltered bay. Cala Deià is a pebble cove with two restaurants, and Llucalcari and Cala Tuent are small shingle coves for confident swimmers. Long sandy beaches of the kind found in the north do not exist here.

What is the minimum stay?

Usually a week in high season, often shorter in spring and autumn. Each villa's calendar shows the minimum stay for your dates, and we are glad to ask the owner on your behalf.

Is the area good for walking?

Very much so. The GR 221 long-distance path passes through Deià, Sóller and Biniaraix, and day walks lead into the Barranc de Biniaraix, down to Cala Deià or up the Puig de l'Ofre. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; in high summer, walk early in the morning.
