Where to Stay in Mallorca: The Best Areas for Every Type of Traveller

Where to stay in Mallorca? Southwest for luxury and yachting, Tramuntana for nature, north for families and beaches. The complete guide for every type of traveller.

Mallorca is larger than most visitors expect, and the differences between its regions are significant. Where to stay in Mallorca matters more than almost any other decision in the planning process, because each part of the island offers something entirely different. Choosing the wrong region can mean missing exactly what you came for. This guide matches each area to the traveller it actually suits.

Southwest Mallorca: For Luxury, Yachting and Easy Access to Palma

The southwest around Port d'Andratx and Andratx is the most exclusive address on the island. Dramatic rocky coastline, turquoise coves reachable only by boat, one of the most well-known marinas on the island and a restaurant scene that holds its own against anywhere in Europe. Palma is around 30 minutes away, the airport similarly close.

What makes the southwest stand out is that it combines seclusion with access. Guests who stay here enjoy the proximity to Palma alongside considerable privacy and quiet. It is the natural choice for couples seeking luxury and discretion, for guests planning yacht trips to remote coves, and for anyone who wants the full Mallorca experience without compromise. The Balearian has its strongest villa portfolio in the southwest, from modern design villas with panoramic sea views to classic properties perched above the harbour.

Best for: couples, luxury travellers, yachting enthusiasts, guests who want Palma as a day trip base.

Tramuntana and Northwest Mallorca: For Nature, Villages and Authentic Mallorca

Anyone wanting to understand what Mallorca looked like before tourism should head northwest. The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, runs the full length of the west coast and offers a landscape unlike anything else in the Mediterranean. Centuries-old olive groves, stone terraced gardens, medieval villages that appear frozen in time.

Deià is widely considered one of the most romantic villages in Europe and draws artists, writers and travellers seeking something authentic. Sóller, connected to Palma by a historic tram, and its harbour Port de Sóller are ideal for families. Valldemossa with its monastery and Banyalbufar with its dramatic cliffs above the sea are addresses that stay with you. Staying here feels slower, deeper and more genuine than anywhere else on the island.

Best for: couples seeking romance and nature, hikers and cyclists, culture lovers, guests who want authentic Mallorca beyond the pool.

North Mallorca: For Families, Beaches and Mallorcan Town Life

The north around Alcúdia and Pollença is Mallorca's most popular family region. The Bay of Alcúdia offers one of the longest sandy beaches on the island, the water is shallow and calm, and the infrastructure for families is excellent. Pollença with its medieval old town, famous Sunday market and Calvari staircase is one of the most charming small towns on the island. Cap de Formentor at the northernmost tip of Mallorca is one of the most spectacular natural viewpoints in the entire Mediterranean.

For anyone wondering where to stay in Mallorca with family, the north is the answer for many. Distances between beach, supermarket and restaurant are short, the atmosphere is relaxed and the rest of the island is easily reachable.

Best for: families with children, beach lovers, guests who want a Mallorcan old town as their base.

Northeast Mallorca: For Peace, Golf and Undiscovered Coastline

The northeast around Capdepera, Artà and Cala Ratjada is one of the least crowded regions on the island. Medieval castles perched above the towns, the stalactite caves of Artà in Canyamel, the wide dune beaches of Cala Agulla and Cala Mesquida, four golf courses within a short drive. The island's easternmost lighthouse at Cap des Freu offers a viewpoint worth the journey on its own.

Staying here means actively choosing less, and getting a stretch of coastline that feels genuinely undiscovered in return.

Best for: golfers, those seeking quiet, couples and families who don't need tourist centres, nature lovers.

East and Southeast Mallorca: For Coves, Privacy and Crystal-Clear Water

The southeast contains some of the most beautiful scenery in Mallorca. The coves of this coastal region, Caló des Moro, Cala S'Almunia, Cala Llombards and Cala Mondragó, are the photographs that make people book a flight. Turquoise water, white sand, pine trees reaching the shore, barely a building in sight.

Santanyí is the quietest and most authentic village on the south coast. The salt flats of Ses Salines form part of a large protected natural area with unique flora and fauna. The Mondragó Natural Park has sheltered coves reachable on foot, and Es Trenc is one of the most famous unspoiled beaches on the island. The drive to Palma takes around 45 to 60 minutes, perfectly manageable for a day trip.

Best for: beach lovers who prefer natural beaches, couples seeking privacy, families with older children, guests who prioritise swimming and snorkelling.

Palma and Surroundings: For Culture, Gastronomy and City Life

Palma is one of the most underrated cities in the Mediterranean. Anyone who stays here finds a 13th-century cathedral, Arab baths from the Middle Ages, a restaurant scene with 12 Michelin stars in 2026, international boutiques and one of the finest old town walks in Europe, all in a city that can be explored on foot in an afternoon.

The area around Palma offers the best of both worlds: city energy and international flair on one side, quiet villas on hillsides overlooking the bay on the other. For guests who don't see Mallorca purely as a beach holiday, Palma and its surroundings are often the smartest choice.

Best for: culture travellers, couples, first-time visitors who want to see the island, guests who want to eat well every evening.

Mallorca Interior: For Absolute Quiet and the Original Island

The island's interior, the Pla de Mallorca around Llubí, Sineu and Santa Eugènia, is not a typical holiday destination. There are no beaches, no marinas and no international atmosphere. Instead: endless olive groves, vineyards, almond orchards, the quietest air on the island and villages that look unchanged from fifty years ago.

Staying here means choosing deceleration in its purest form. Ideal for retreats, yoga stays, outdoor weddings or simply for guests who want to genuinely switch off for a week.

Best for: retreats and events, groups seeking maximum quiet, guests with a car who plan to explore the whole island.

Where to Stay in Mallorca: Our Recommendation

There is no wrong region in Mallorca, only regions that fit or don't fit your particular type of holiday. The southwest for luxury and exclusivity, the northwest for authenticity and nature, the north for families and beaches, the southeast for coves and stillness, Palma for culture and hospitality.

We know all of these regions from the inside and have handpicked villas in most of them, from small fincas for two to large estates for twelve guests and more. This is part of our concierge service: we help our guests not only choose the right villa, but also find the region that best suits their stay.
