Water Shortage in Mallorca and Ibiza: What's Really Going On Right Now

Tourists consume up to seven times more water than residents. Reservoirs at low levels, tanker lorries in the Tramuntana, Ibiza 98% dependent on desalination: the current situation explained.

The Balearic Islands are one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Europe, and one of the most water-scarce. Water shortage in Mallorca and Ibiza is not an abstract environmental issue but a daily reality that affects residents, farmers and increasingly visitors too. In the summer of 2026, the situation is more strained than it has been in many years, and it is worth looking more closely at what is actually happening.

What Is Currently Happening in Mallorca

Reservoir levels on Mallorca stood at around 47 percent after May 2026, a drop from 50 percent in April, and this just ahead of the peak summer season. Several supply zones have already reached the early-warning level, which can trigger local restrictions. In the Tramuntana mountains, around 10,000 residents were cut off from their water supply in recent years: in villages including Banyalbufar, Esporles and Bunyola, tanker lorries brought drinking water from Palma for months on end. The mayor of Banyalbufar had to shut off the water supply for 17 hours a day just to build enough pressure in the pipes for the remaining hours.

Mallorca draws its water from three sources: two reservoirs in the Tramuntana, private wells and desalination plants in Andratx and Alcúdia. The problem: wells are being drilled ever deeper, until seawater infiltrates the groundwater and contaminates it with salt. Desalination is energy-intensive and expensive: even water produced using renewable energy costs at least three times more than natural groundwater.

The Situation in Ibiza

Ibiza faces an even more extreme version of the same problem. The island capital depends on desalinated water for 98 percent of its supply. Natural sources have long been unable to meet the demands of peak tourist season; there is no natural water reserve left on Ibiza that could cover high-season demand. The desalination plants are currently running at their limit. In the event of a serious breakdown, the only alternative would be well water, an emergency scenario nobody on the island wants to experience.

The waste situation adds another layer of complexity: Ibiza has no recycling plants of its own. Even carefully sorted waste is shipped by boat to Saragossa or Mallorca, meaning that even a recycled plastic bottle leaves a significant carbon footprint behind.

The Tourism Factor

Water shortage in Mallorca and Ibiza is also a direct consequence of tourism. Studies show that a tourist consumes between 400 and 1,000 litres of water per day, while residents are restricted to 133 litres. That is three to seven times the local average. The reason is straightforward: hotels, private pools, spas, gardens and golf courses consume enormous quantities of water during the hottest and driest months of the year, precisely when natural reserves are at their lowest.

A study in Mallorca found that more than 80 percent of hotels surveyed knew how much water they were consuming, but had no idea how they were using it. Awareness of the issue has not yet reached everyone who needs to hear it.

What Visitors Can Actually Do

Small actions add up. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth saves up to 12 litres per minute. Watering a garden with a can rather than a hosepipe avoids using up to 1,000 litres per hour. Reporting a dripping tap immediately prevents a loss of up to 30 litres per day.

Practical tips for a holiday in Mallorca or Ibiza: shower instead of bathing; a short shower uses around five times less water than a full bath. Ask not to have towels and bed linen changed daily; most properties offer this option. Refill the pool only when genuinely necessary. Buy local water brands rather than imported mineral water.

Sustainability as Part of the Island Experience

Sustainability in Mallorca and Ibiza does not mean going without; it means being aware. Anyone who genuinely knows and loves these islands understands: these landscapes, these coves, this nature are not to be taken for granted. They need care, respect and a conscious approach to the resources that sustain them.

As an agency that lives and works on these islands, this is not a topic we can ignore. We pay attention to sustainable features when selecting our villas, from water treatment systems to modern pools that use less water. And we actively recommend local, low-impact experiences to our guests wherever possible.

Final Thoughts

Water shortage in Mallorca and Ibiza is a problem that will not go away, but one that can be eased through shared awareness and small daily choices. The islands are beautiful because they are natural. Keeping them that way requires guests who understand that and providers who take it seriously.
