Travel Insurance for Spain, Mallorca and Ibiza: A Complete Guide

Spain's health system is solid. But on Mallorca and Ibiza, private doctors are often the easier choice. What that means for your cover and when travel insurance is worth it.

Spain has one of the best health systems in Europe. And yet many visitors to Mallorca or Ibiza eventually reach the same question: am I actually properly covered here?

Public or Private: The Real Difference on Mallorca and Ibiza

EU citizens can use Spain's public health system with a European Health Insurance Card, free of charge, in state facilities. That is the starting point. What many visitors don't realise is that the public and private systems in Spain differ considerably, and not just in the language spoken.

In the public system, almost all communication is in Spanish. Specialist appointments can take several weeks. The treating doctor is assigned, not chosen. Dental treatment is only covered in emergencies. And outside regular opening hours, the emergency room is the only option.

In the private system, the picture is different: same-day or next-day appointments, free choice of doctor, English-speaking practices widely available particularly on Mallorca, a broader range of services and shorter waiting times. The catch: private treatment is always paid by the patient directly, regardless of what health cover you have at home. Reimbursement from your insurer is possible but rarely complete.

The biggest blind spot remains medical repatriation. A medical transport from Mallorca back home costs an average of around €12,500 and is almost never covered by standard health insurance policies.

Travel Medical Insurance: When It Makes the Difference

Travel medical insurance closes exactly these gaps. It covers private doctor costs on Mallorca and Ibiza, pays for medical repatriation and allows treatment without upfront payment. For trips of up to eight weeks, annual policies are available at very low cost: one of the few insurance products where the price-to-value ratio genuinely holds up.

Travel Cancellation Insurance: Especially Relevant for Villa Bookings

Anyone who books a luxury villa on Mallorca or Ibiza for several weeks makes a significant financial commitment. What happens if illness or an accident prevents travel just before departure?

Without cancellation insurance, the full booking costs fall to the traveller. Depending on the cancellation policy, that can mean losing the entire rental price. Travel cancellation insurance covers these costs in the event of illness-related cancellation and is therefore one of the most sensible forms of protection for high-value bookings.

Insurance Packages: Complete Cover in One

For many travellers, an insurance package is the most straightforward solution. It combines medical cover, cancellation protection and additional elements such as trip interruption, baggage cover or travel liability, in one product, usually at a lower combined cost than taking out individual policies separately.

Final Thoughts

Spain's public system is a solid foundation. And anyone with an expensive villa booking should factor in cancellation cover from the start.
