Total Solar Eclipse Over Mallorca 2026: The Event of the Century

Total solar eclipse in Mallorca 2026: When, where and how to experience the event of the century. All the key facts about timing, duration and visibility in Mallorca and Ibiza.

The solar eclipse in Mallorca 2026 will take place on 12 August, plunging the island into darkness for around 1 minute and 36 seconds. But when exactly will the total solar eclipse begin in Mallorca, where are the best places to watch it, and what should you know beforehand?

Solar Eclipse Mallorca 2026: When Does It Take Place?

The moon's shadow travels on 12 August 2026 from the Arctic through Iceland and northern Spain into the eastern Mediterranean. Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera all lie entirely within the path of totality; the total solar eclipse over the Balearic Islands will be visible across the entire archipelago.

What makes the total solar eclipse over Mallorca extraordinary is its position in the day. Totality begins at around 20:31 CEST, just before sunset, with the sun only 2 to 3 degrees above the western horizon. The eclipsed sun will be reflected in the Mediterranean, moonlight will meet the golden evening light, and the sky will move through a colour palette that cannot be seen under any other conditions. A sunset eclipse directly over the sea is astronomically rare.

Totality lasts between 1 minute 30 seconds and 2 minutes 17 seconds depending on location. The partial phase begins as early as 19:37; nearly an hour before totality, the changing light is already clearly perceptible.

Where to Watch the Solar Eclipse in Mallorca 2026?

Since the sun will be very low in the west at the moment of totality, an unobstructed view towards the western horizon is the single most important factor. Even small hills, buildings or trees can block the view of the low-lying sun, something that makes no difference on an ordinary summer day but here decides everything.

The Tramuntana northwest coast is considered the best observation area on the island. Places such as Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Port de Sóller and Deià look out over open sea in exactly the right direction. Cap de Formentor is also well positioned, but expect significant journey times.

Villas with a western orientation and open sea views have a genuine advantage here: no building, no tree, no hill in the way, just the horizon.

Authorities and the tourism industry are expecting an extraordinary surge in visitors. Many viewpoints are likely to reach full capacity hours before totality. Anyone without a fixed private location risks spending the 90 seconds of the solar eclipse August 2026 in a traffic jam.

What About Ibiza?

Ibiza also lies entirely within the totality zone. The solar eclipse in Ibiza begins in Sant Antoni at around 20:33 and lasts approximately 1 minute 21 seconds. The west coast of the island looking towards Formentera offers ideal conditions: Cala Conta, Cala Tarida and Sant Antoni itself are well positioned for the event.

Solar Eclipse Mallorca 2026: What You Need to Know

Looking at the partially eclipsed sun damages the retina permanently and without any warning pain. Certified eclipse glasses meeting the ISO 12312-2 standard are mandatory for all partial phases: from 19:37 until totality begins, and again immediately after. Buy them before travelling, as stocks on Mallorca will run out quickly.

Only during totality itself may you briefly remove the glasses and observe the solar corona with the naked eye. The moment the first sliver of sun reappears, put them back on immediately. For cameras and binoculars: never point them at the sun without a proper solar filter fitted in front of the lens.

A Private Villa as Your Viewing Point

Anyone who would rather experience the total solar eclipse over Mallorca in a private setting will find a villa with an unobstructed western view far more relaxed than a public viewpoint. No crowds, no parking stress, no risk of spending those 90 seconds surrounded by strangers.

Villa Son Verí Nou sits right on the waterfront at the Bay of Palma with an unobstructed view to the west, exactly the direction of the eclipse. The villa is still available for the week of 12 August. For Ibiza, we also have several villas on the west coast available. We are happy to help find the right location for this particular evening.

Final Thoughts

The solar eclipse Mallorca 2026 is an astronomical once-in-a-century event taking place on one of the most beautiful holiday islands in the Mediterranean: in the middle of summer, at sunset, directly over the sea. After less than two minutes, it will be over. That is exactly why many visitors will still remember this evening decades from now.
