New York to Ibiza Direct Flight 2027: United Launches First Nonstop Route

United Airlines will fly nonstop between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), in the New York metropolitan area, and Ibiza (IBZ) starting May 31, 2027. The airline announced the new route on August 25, 2026, with four flights a week, making it the first and only carrier to connect the island directly with the United States.

The New Airbus A321XLR

The route will be flown on United's new long-range narrowbody, the A321XLR, one of the first five international routes to feature the aircraft. Onboard, it offers 20 Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats, 32 premium seats in total, a significant step up from the aircraft previously used on comparable routes. Tickets are already on sale, with round-trip fares currently starting around $940 (approximately €809), though prices are subject to change.

Why United Is Adding Ibiza Now

The decision lands at a moment of sharply rising demand from North America. According to Ibiza's tourism intelligence system (SIT Ibiza), roughly 4.9 million flight searches between the US and Ibiza were recorded between January and June 2026, up 39.7% year over year. In May 2026 alone, the number of North American visitors to the island rose 21.74% compared to the previous year, and on the busiest day in June, more than 6,500 US visitors were recorded. American hotel brands now account for around 12% of Ibiza's total hotel capacity.

Ibiza Council president Vicent Marí described the new connection as a bet on quality over volume, noting that extending the season into October should help spread tourist activity beyond the peak summer months.

Newark–Palma as the Blueprint

United has flown nonstop between New York/Newark and Palma de Mallorca since 2022, a route the airline has repeatedly described as a strong performer. Since launch, seat capacity on the route has increased by more than 75%, larger aircraft have been deployed, and frequency has grown from three to four weekly flights. That track record appears to have played a role in United's decision to add Ibiza to its network.

Part of United's Largest-Ever International Expansion

Ibiza is one of ten new international destinations United announced for 2027, which the airline calls the largest international network expansion in its history. Also new from Newark: Valencia (starting June 2, 2027, three times weekly), regaining a direct New York connection after 15 years, alongside Marseille, Luxembourg and other European cities, several also flown on the new A321XLR.

What Changes for Travellers

Until now, there has been no way to reach Ibiza from the US without a connection, typically via Madrid, Barcelona, London or Amsterdam. The new route cuts travel time noticeably and brings Ibiza within a similar level of accessibility for New York-area travellers as Mallorca has enjoyed since 2022. Through United's Newark hub, connections also open up to a wide network of destinations across the US and the wider Americas.

For American travellers, the new connection is likely to change one thing above all: Ibiza becomes far easier to reach for a longer stay, or a spontaneous one.
